Simultaneous interpreting between Italian and English for a public event
I worked with two remembrance associations, one based in Italy and one in the UK, providing simultaneous and consecutive interpreting services during celebrations commemorating the 80th anniversary of the 1943 armistice in Servigliano, in the province of Fermo, central Italy. My role was to enable communication between Italian and English speakers during presentations of historical research, accounts from former prisoners of war, speeches from public figures and inauguration of a commemorative plaque.
Background
CDM is an association based in the Marche region dedicated to documenting events and experiences at the former prison camp of Servigliano, whilst MSMT is an association founded in London, in 1989, to recognise the courage of Italians that helped thousands of allied prisoners of who escaped from the camp after the armistice.
Marking the 80th anniversary, the two associations invited former prisoners of war and their relatives from all around the world to Servigliano, with visitors travelling from the UK and as far as New Zealand to express their gratitude to the families of the local area who offered protection.
Collaboration
For indoor events, including presentations, discussions, accounts and Q&As, I worked in a team in a soundproofed booth, ensuring effective simultaneous interpreting of all speech between Italian and English.
During visits to the site of the concentration camp, the historical exhibition and the inauguration of the commemorative plaque, I employed consecutive interpreting, standing alongside the speakers, paying particular attention to the sombre tone of accounts and the solemn nature of the institutional ceremonies.
I lent my voice to Dennis Hill, Mario Calabresi and Isabella Insolvibile, among others, ensuring the public could capture the scientific, historic and emotional subtleties of their words. I also interpreted for the speeches of the Mayor, Prefect, Ambassador and Defence Attaché during official ceremonies.
